Oral Care

Your mouth is a finely crafted instrument, with each element working in harmony to help compose the symphony that is you. It allows you to receive food and water, speak, and smile.

Just like an instrument, your teeth and gums need proper care and attention to stay in tune, and as a health and social care worker, the people in your care rely on you to help them stay in tune.

People in care are already at risk of feeling marginalised and may find it hard to socialise and find their place in society. This is only heightened if they’re in pain with – or feel self-conscious about – their mouth and teeth, because poor oral care can lead to painful physical conditions that have a serious impact on someone’s mental health, self-esteem, social interactions, and overall quality of life. So, being able to support the people in your care with oral hygiene is an essential part of your role.

This course is for anyone who works in a care setting, whether that’s a care home or supporting people in their own home. During the course, we’ll cover the fundamentals of how and why you must provide good oral care, and we’ll explore the conditions associated with poor oral hygiene and how to prevent them.
